Continuous Glucose Monitor Systems and the Benefits of the FreeStyle

Living with Diabetes and learning to manage it properly is not always easy. From monitoring glucose levels to eating a proper diet to watching for warning signs, many patients can find the process downright overwhelming.

Advancements in Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMs) have certainly helped to ease the process and allow for 24/7 monitoring. But, with so many choices in the market – how do you choose the CGMs that are right for you? Let Quest Health Solutions help you decide! We have over 20 years of experience and we can help walk you through the process.

What is a Continuous Glucose Monitoring?

First, it’s important to understand how a CGMs works. A small electrode is placed under the skin and is held in place by an adhesive. A transmitter attached to the electrode sends data to a separate unit and takes readings on set intervals allowing a patient to record and access valuable information to help manage and control their Diabetes. Patients can easily track daily patterns, ranges and targets and receive alerts when trending too high or too low. Prior to CGMs, the main way to test glucose levels was through frequent and painful fingersticks. Continuous Glucose Monitoring systems have helped to create an easier and less painful way to manage Diabetes.

CGMs Similarities

There are certain components that can be found in all CGM systems. When deciding, it’s important to look for the unique features that set them apart. Three popular monitoring systems in the market today are the Dexcom, Medtronic and the FreeStyle Libre. All three systems use a sensor that is inserted subcutaneously as well as a transmitter and receiver to allow for data collection. Each provides reporting that records and tracks activity to show trends and aid in overall management. Thanks to advancements in technology, all three devices allow patients to lead a healthy and active lifestyle in comfort and with minimal skin irritation. When reviewing the different devices there are, however, a few factors that set them apart.

EASE OF USE

The ease of the insertion process and the level of discomfort and difficulty involved is a top consideration. Devices that are difficult to use can often deter patients from effectively managing their Diabetes. When comparing the three devices, the FreeStyle Libre has the easiest process and requires only a single-step insertion which is desirable among users. The Dexcom has a two-step process that involves a complicated taping procedure. Medtronic devices require a multi-step process that also involves taping of both the sensor and transmitter and is more likely to cause skin irritation.

CGMs SENSOR LIFE AND WEAR TIME

Convenience is key! A device that does not have to be replaced regularly and allows patients to continue a normal, daily routine is vital. Sensor life on each device varies, but when comparing the three, the FreeStyle Libre comes out on top with a 14-day sensor life and wear time. Dexcom’s sensor life is 7 days and Medtronic’s is 6 days. The FreeStyle Libre gives patients a hassle-free experience and doesn’t take the focus away from day-to-day events and activities. FreeStyle Libre sensors are also disposable for the ultimate convenience whereas Dexcom and Medtronic sensors must be cleaned and disinfected.

CALIBRATION FREQUENCY

Calibration is often needed to test the accuracy of a device to ensure it is recording correct values and sensor performance. In Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems this often requires a fingerstick to compare glucose levels for optimal results. The number of times a CGMs needs calibration is often a deciding factor for many patients when selecting a device. The FreeStyle Libre does not require any calibration and is the most convenient of the three. The Dexcom needs to be calibrated twice daily and the Medtronic requires calibration three to four times per day. Time is valuable. A busy and active lifestyle requires convenience, and the FreeStyle Libre is the best option for someone who doesn’t have time to calibrate throughout the day.

The Freestyle Libre

If you’re not convinced the FreeStyle Libre is the right choice, here are a few more reasons why we personally rank it the highest on our list.

  • 1) It’s convenient A sensor is worn on the back of the upper arm and measures glucose every minute. Patients simply swipe a handheld reader over the sensor for a one-second scan to receive data. Each scan provides a current glucose reading, a trend arrow and an 8-hour history. Patients can easily track daily patterns, ranges and targets and can even receive alerts when they are trending high or low. Plus, it’s discreet and can be used anytime, anywhere.

  • 2) It’s advanced The FreeStyle Libre is the longest lasting self-applied sensor on the market today. It captures 14 days of data and stores the information for up to 90 days. There is also a downloadable app that allows patients to get readings on their smart device. Data can be shared with up to ten followers. A strong support system helps to keep patients in check and holds them accountable. It also helps to manage a potential crisis with active monitoring and creates peace of mind for everyone involved.

  • 3) It’s cost-effective The FreeStyle Libre is the least expensive among the three systems and a great option overall.
